A Tiscuit a Tascut a Green and Yellow Basket…What the heck is a tiscuit and how do you spell it?

Mmm mmm good! I can’t stop gnawing on things! Why? Because I CAN!!! I’ve been getting my chopers back slowly but surely. I do my little “open up and saw OW” exercises to get my mouth open wider and Dr. Quo’s Otrhodonic force to be reckoned with has gotten my molars a bit more intimate, though still no touching. YET. Naughty teeth. I know what they want.

Okay moving on.

Court makes this wonderful little breakfast food called..um…Sausage Court Muffin…that sound just so wrong. But it’s a Sausage Mc’Muffin minus the Mc and plus the Court. How would you put it? Anyhow, I found these cool pre-formed just throw em in the oven biscuits in the pudding part of the Safeway refridgerator section, so I brought them home and one night we had breakfast for dinner and I got to eat the thing…assembled! Didn’t have to dissect…cause it was squishable. So exciting.

Biscuit height

It was THIS BIG!!! (pre-squish)

ow ahh

Say “AHHHHHHHH” Okay…”OWWWWW”

stuck biscuit

I think it’s stuck.

I can do it!

You can DO it!

Nummy!

NUMMY!!!

I know you’re jealous. Get your own. teehee!

    Looks tasty! =)

Not sure what a “tisket” or a “tasket” is/was (Google is no help) (perhaps just made-up words for the purposes of a rhyme?), but I grew up spelling like so. Plus Ella Fitzgerald spelled it that way in her song, so, yeah, “Tisket” and “Tasket” (whatever they may be).

  3. Wow Shelby,
I bet that is great to be able to bite down and chew again, rather then sucking everything through a straw or tongue thrusting it to death! LOL…
How many weeks are you post surgery now? Can you actually feel your teeth again now? or are they still numb? I ask because at over 1 year post op, I just started getting the feeling back in my top left incisors and canine. My teeth were so sensitive after my palate expansion (modified Lefort 1) that I had trouble biting into anything for a long time. You seem like you are doing amazingly well! Oh, and you look terrific too! Wouldn’t even know you had surgery recently.

I just found out on Valentines day that I too will be having the works done on me. Upper, lower, and genio. :( I’m so not excited…..in fact it is like darkness is looming nearer and nearer everyday! The original plan was just for lower jaw advancement. Now its all three! They will be moving my maxilla out 3mm, and my lowers up to meet them approximately 6-7mm. Then doing genio if it is necessary. :( Supposedly this will get rid of my apnea but still make me look good (according to my OS) Anyway….my surgery is scheduled for May 24th, the day after school ends. Any pre-surgical tips? or things that helped you survive post surgery?

    Hey Brandy,

Thanks for writing! Yes, my tongue gets s bit of a break with my front teeth pitching in now. Phew!

I don’t know how you are going back under…my hat’s off to you. If they hadn’t done everything at once, I’d be sol since you couldn’t pay me to get more work done… Funny I remember thinking that post surgery, but that body does forget things and I guess I can see how you can go back in.

I am so so sorry that you are feeling this looming darkness. You are very strong, but as you know, we do what must be done. Imagine: no CPAP machine. No chronic nightmares. A chance at not catching every germ that passes by and turning into ugly colds. No falling asleep while driving? I’m just guessing at the things you are experiencing pre-MMA, since that’s what I had. Am I close?

Good luck! The genio was so worth it. Got a few extra mm out of it and am pretty sure when I got back someday for another sleep study it will have been up in the 90’s of success.

As for numbness: I had my surgery on Dec 26, so I am almost 3 months post op and brushig my teeth is weird and not something I look forwrd to. When somethig touches my teeth I cringe like nails on a chalkboard. I guess that’s becuase of the random numbness.

I have my upper lip back and about 70% of my lower lip. I cannot feel my gums on the top front of my teeth but they are kind of coming back on the lower front. The roof of my mouth is still numb except for a little spot on one side behind a canine.
I can kind of feel my lower teeth but not the tops ones. I can feel the skin on my chin nd the sides of my jaw, but not the flesh under the skin on the front (where they cut the bone for the genio).

I don’t know about all these guys who have had the surgery and kept off the 10 lbs they lost…maybe when they hurt they DON’T eat…I managed to find a way to get those calories in and gained a whole bunch of weight…don’t know if that’s a concern for you.

    Pre surgery tips…
Breathe. No sense worrying about something over which you have no control. Do lots of jumping jacks (none of that post-op…ouch!)
    Oh!
Get your prescriptions before surgery. you do not want to wait at a pharmacy the day you get released from the hospital. On that day, you will want to go home and take drugs and do nothing.
Learn sign language (and hopefully your family and friends will learn it too since it won’t do you any good if they can’t understand what you’re saying). Or at least learn signals for important things. I liked the sign of Thank you. It’s all I could say and it was nice to say it.
Have spiral bound notebooks around so you can communicate. Writing instruments help too.
Who will be helping you post op?

Post surgery: Make sure that the person taking care of you stays on top of your meds. If you’re in pain and have to ask for them it’s too late. Someone should have an alarm set and give them to you like clockwork – just like they did in the hospital. Don’t get behind on your meds because it takes too long to get back on top.
Since you will be drinking your fluids throught that lovely syringe, maybe try some out now and have them at home already. I found that miso soup (just the broth), chicken broth (the trader joes organic was so good), and clear juices were key to have on hand. I would also advise LOTS of prune juice (those opiates stop you up and you do not want to worry about…um…pushing…post op).
Have I written enough? What a mouthful!
I should make a page of things to do pre and post op…because I know I wil think of more later.

What are you in school for? Surgery the day after? No prep time? Sounds like me. Worked up to the holiday and had the surgery the day after. I thought I could work up to the last day but I just couldn’t. I needed some time to wrap my head around it, but I didn’t think I did until I was at work that week thinking about all the things I wanted to do before my surgery.

One more thing I did: I made a special easy access pi; of clothes that wouldn’t be painful to put on. Wide neck, drawstring waist, lots of PJs. It was so nice not having to think about clothing and just having everything right there when I got out of the shower. Just a thought.

Talk to you soon! Where do you live?

    Shelby

  5. Hey Shelby,
Thanks for all the great tips! Yeah, I’m not excited about going back in for this surgery, but hey, like you said….you do what you gotta do. Honestly my palate expansion surgery wasn’t that bad. I so hated the numb teeth thing though. It is seriously 1 year post op and just now..just this past couple of weeks I got the feeling back in my front two incisors, and canine. I’m sorta bumming as now I only have 2 months to enjoy feeling back to normal, before I start over again! Ughhhh!

Anyway…as for school. I’m an elementary school counselor so my last official working day is the 25th, but the kids get out of school on the 23rd. I have a lot of sick leave, and wanted to have a full 3 months (all of summer vacation) to recover. So I scheduled my surgery on the 24th. I also have a conference I’m supposed to be going to in Vegas on June 23rd (4 weeks post op) so I want to be well enough to do that too.

  6. Opps…sorry hit the submit button prematurely! Premature blog posting….Think that is something to be worried about! LOL…

Anyway…you asked who would be caring for me. Well my mom lives with us so she will probably be helping me with most of my eating. My darling husband will be helping me with the meds etc for the first few days. He had out patient shoulder surgery last year, so I got to see first hand how the anethesia affected him. Also the staying ahead of the pain was a big deal. He got behind one time and it was not pretty! He also had problems with….becoming a bit “plugged up” and for a guy that goes #2 about 5 times a day it was pretty rough on him.

I honestly didn’t have much pain at all with my SARPE. I never took anything more then advil. I’m guessing that this one will be considerably more uncomfortable. Not so much on top as I’m pretty sure I will be mostly numb there, but my lower advancement they will be doing a bone graft also to support an molar implant later. PLUS! as if all of this wasn’t enough. When they did my SARPE, they also removed a wisdom tooth. Since them I have been having chronic sinus infections, and I had a bad taste in one of my upper molars. I pretty much got the run around….ortho sent me to the dentist, who sent me to an endo specialist, who did a root canal (that I really didn’t need.) So then when things didn’t improve the OS sent me to the ENT to get cat scans done. WElll….long story short, I felt like I was being blown off and nobody was finding anything wrong. I, however, know my body very well and knew that something was not right. Being the research slueth that I am. I started researching my symptoms and came across what is called an “oral antral Fistula” basically it a small hole, that sometimes happens with wisdom tooth extractions, and causes a communication between the sinus cavity and the oral cavity. Basically the bacteria from your mouth gets into your sinuses and creates chronic sinus infections and a bad taste in the area of the hole. Sooo….I contacted the OS and asked if this could be my problem. He looked at my panoramic Xrays and said, “YES….this may very well be what you have” (nothing like diagnosing myself eh) So…now the plan is, that since he will basically have my sinuses sawed in half, he will get in there with a scope and try and locate this hole (which I should add is a very rare occurance) and fix it. So the whole procedure will be:

    Lefort 1(upper)
Scope of sinuses and repair hole
    BSSO (lower)
Bone graft on left second molar area
    Genioplasty

Its a lot! I’m truly just living in denial, its too much for me to wrap my head around, and while I have forgotten some of the discomfort that went along with my SARPE I have not forgotten all of it, and know this is going to be worse. I just want to get through it, and I know it will be worth it in the long run (shoot people do this stuff everyday just for perfect occulusions are they freakin out of their minds??? ) I’m doing it for a much bigger reason as you well know. You were right on with most of the other apnea symptoms, although I have never fallen asleep while driving.

I love the idea of the easy on easy off clothes. I’m assuming I will just live in my Pj’s but I will make sure they are ready to go and separated out. I will definitely get some prune juice too. I had some nasty organic chicken broth tonight which I definittely will not be buying for my post surgery recovery, but I will start trying some others out. I bet Miso broth would be really good too, and it has some redeeming qualities to it too.

Man I’m writing a mini book here too ……Chapter 5……
I live in Alaska, and have amazingly had 4 years of american sign language! LOL…. Not that anyone in my house understands it, but hey, I can sign like nobodies buisness! I will buy a write on wipe off board to use for communication as well as some spiral notebooks, AND I will get my perscriptions filled prior to my surgery. All very good info to have ahead of time.

I will sign off for now, as I think one of those cold bugs may have caught up with me and I need to go to bed and try and fight it off before it takes hold. Gab with you later!

Oh…and I wanted to tell you how terrific I think you look. I don’t think the surgery changed your looks all that much….I mean you look great I think!

    Chow for now!

    Brandy
