Hi Shelby,
Thanks for your blog, and making light of your ordeal! That certainly helps with my with my decision to go in for the surgery. Out of curiosity, why did you decide to pursue the surgical route? Wasn’t the CPAP working for you?

Hello Akshay!
Thanks for reading and writing me! I decided to pursue the surgical route because my airway was so small, the CPAP machine made life better but not great. Since I knew I was going to have at least one surgery, and I had a friend who had had the “Stanford Protocol” of GA and UPPP and saw his limited success, I chose to jump in with both feet and skip those initial two since the improvement rates were so incredibly small. Interestingly, I have a friend who decided to get the MMA/GA like I did who has been having such a hard time with braces and jaw stuff post op that he kind of wishes he’d just had a trach. I have to tell you. Although I understand his frustration and I myself am still dealing with things a few years post-op, I would get the surgery again in a heartbeat. Dealing with this post-op stuff every day WITHOUT fatigue, WITHOUT a sore throat, WITH a functional immune system is a piece of cake when looking back at how I felt pre-MMA. I had a peek at that fatigue again when I got allergies and my throat closed just enough to get me into the 36+ hypopnea state, so I did get the UPPP 2 years out (you may have read about it), but I would still do the MMA/GA again without a doubt.
Everyone is different.
Keep that in mind. I am sure you do.
Please let me know if you have any other questions about my experience (which is different in its own way than anything you will go through).
Glad to help with my perspective!
Shelby
Whoops… I didn’t realize that my post would go ‘live’ without your prior approval. Can you remove my email address and Cupertino Joe’s real name from there?
I “unapproved” your post. Sorry! I approved you so didn’t filter your comments through moderation.
